Maths

Our aim for mathematics at St John's is to foster positive attitudes towards mathematics, with a love for numbers and making sense of mathematics. We aim that all children leave primary school with a working understanding of mathematics in the wider world.

At St John's we use mastery for mathematics, following White Rose Maths, to give children a broad and deep understanding of the mathematics curriculum. Children have mathematics lessons every day, focusing on building a good understanding of mathematics and how to apply it. Problem solving is ingrained into each lesson, giving children the opportunity to solve problems and explain their reasoning from Reception all the way to Year 6. We use the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) model of mathematics and ensure that our children have hands-on lessons to deepen their knowledge of the subject.

Please see our School Calculation Policies to see the progression for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for each year group.
