Falcon - Year 6

Hello! I am Mr Glancy and I teach Falcon class. I enjoy teaching all the subjects but some of my favourites are reading, writing and science. I love sharing with my class my joy of reading and I share all my favourite stories with them. I am very proud to be part of the teaching profession and a member of St John’s school.

At school I lead Reading which I am very passionate about.  I am also lead of Partnerships which means I have an enjoyable role inviting guests into the school to give special lessons or organise events such as trips to the Kings School.

In my spare time I love to read, listen to music, go for days out with my wife and my two children and find nice places out to eat!

Other staff working in our class are:

Mrs Bainbridge - Teacher Assistant

Mrs Sanger - Third teacher

Mrs Woodward - Cover teacher

Our weekly timetable:

Our learning this term

English:

This term we will be reading ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. The children always absolutely love reading this book and as a result, we expect to see some exceptional writing! This term we will be focusing on more formal writing styles. Through this, we will be revisiting sentence structures, levels of formality, as well as high-level punctuation. We are excited to see the children’s reactions as the story continues to develop and how this is reflected in their writing. As always, please do not read this book at home (or watch the film) until we are done so that we can share the reading experience together as a class.

Maths

This term we will be completing our work on decimals and will begin working on the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. This unit focusses on comparing, ordering, understanding, equivalency and finding a percent of an amount.  As always, we will be providing children with daily opportunities to revisit previous learning and aim to make this as fun as possible.

Geography:

In Geography this term, we will continue to study Trade and Transport. The children have loved this topic so far and have developed a keen interest in Canterbury’s businesses and tourism. This term we will be looking at the economy, trade and the effect inflation has on our society today.

RE:

In RE this term we will exploring the big question: 'What is it like to be Jewish in Britain today?' In this unit of work, pupils will make connections between Jewish practice, teachings from the Torah and Jewish beliefs about God before considering how this impacts Jewish people today. Within our lessons, we will be encouraging our pupils to answer the key question in a thoughtful and respectful way.

Judaism's Greatest Challenge | Ki Tavo | Covenant & Conversation | The Rabbi Sacks Legacy

Science:

This term we are learning more about electricity and circuits. The children will be exploring what makes up a simple circuit. They will be making circuits using different electronic devices such as bulbs, buzzers, motors and switches and learning how to represent these circuits using the correct symbols in circuit diagrams. They will also be learning what affects the brightness of a bulb or the loudness of a buzzer.
