Swift - Year 4

Hi, I am Mrs Brown and I teach Year 4 Swift class. I have been a teacher for 7 years and am excited to be back in KS2.

I lead Maths across the school and love seeing all the learning the children are doing in maths and the progress they make.

Outside of school I love listening to music and going to the theatre and getting to eat my husband's delicious cooking.

Other staff working in our class are:

English

Our class book this term continues to be Who let the Gods out? By Maz Evans. We will continue to read the book and find out what happens to Virgo and Elliot. We will be writing some biographies about Greek Gods and Goddesses as well as improving our narrative skills.

We will continue to use a range of Year 4 writing skills such as subordinate clauses, speech, fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases.

Reading

Whilst reading our class book, the children will be building on their inference skills and justify their answer using information from the text. Year 4 will continue to read independently every day and use Accelerated Reader to complete quizzes about the book.

Curriculum

This term we are continuing to explore the history topic of 'Grooving with the Greeks'. We will be exploring the impact the Ancient Greek have on modern day, and thinking about Greek theatre, their beliefs and the Olympic games.

Science

This term we are continuing to explore Electricity. Year 4 will be learning what is needed to make a circuit work and how we can fix ones that don’t work. We will learn the symbols for the components of a circuit too.

RE

This term RE, our focus is on the big question, is Why do Christians call the day that Jesus died ‘Good Friday’? We will be exploring what happened on Maundy Thursday and why it is important to Christians as well as the meaning of Easter.

Learning at home for Swift Class

  • Reading expectation for year group
  • Spelling shed
  • TTS Rockstars
  •

Be ready for learning! In Swift Class, your child will need to have these items in school:

  • PE kit (to be worn on PE day)
  • Water bottle (no squash or juice)
  • Small rucksack (big enough to hold lunchbox and reading books)
  • Wellington boots (to leave in school)
  • Coat (weather appropriate)

Please don’t bring other items into school, as we do not have space to store these, and it can cause upset if things are lost or damaged.

Highlights of our learning so far this year:

Term 3

Ice week was a real hit with the children! They enjoyed finding ways to get items out of ice. This inspired their narratives for the week too.

Swifts loved making their Greek Pots this term and getting them fired in the kiln; it was an amazing experience.

We loved our Hook day and 'Becoming Greeks'. We made laurel wreaths to show our job and skills, learnt about some famous Greek Gods and looked at some consolations that we heard about in our class book.

Term 2

Swifts were invited to take part in the Canterbury light festival. They loved showing off the lanterns they made.

Swifts loved their trip around Canterbury and to the Beaney. They enjoyed seeing all the different types of shops and looked around the library.

Swifts loved writing firework poems based on our class books The Firework-maker's daughter.

Term 1

Swift class did some outdoor learning, exploring information about whether the Dark Ages deserved its name.

Swift class composed their own body procession music to represent the battel between Beowulf and Grendel. Scan the QR codes to see their music pieces.

Year 4 loved their trip to the Abbey and learning about the significance of the Anglo-Saxons and the abbey in the rise of Christianity.

St Augustine's Abbey – Canterbury Historical and Archaeological Society

Swift class enjoyed their money workshop with Ootiboo. They learnt about the importance of a wage and how best to spend their money.

We enjoyed our Anglo-Saxon day and loved making brooches.
